Caterina’s
tradition of handcrafting premium wines began seven generations ago
in the village of San Pietro Vara in the hills of Northern Italy.
There, Caterina lovingly created wines for the sake of enjoying
them with family and friends.
Caterina Winery first opened its doors in Washington State in 1993
as a tribute to a beloved Grandmother and family icon.
Today her legacy continues as we follow the traditions of careful
attention to detail; beginning with both traditional and
progressive vineyard management practices. From hand harvesting
through precisely regulated fermentations, we remain intimate with
each and every lot of wine up until the thoughtful selection of
barrels where we lay the wine to rest. We then relinquish our
guidance, and replace it with the most simple of nurturing.
The wine is put to sleep much as a very young child. It is during
this rest period that the wine evolves, essentially "grows" on its
own until, as with most things youthful, it passes through a phase
of independence. Upon awakening, we restore the once intimate
relationship we began the moment we decided to turn fruit into
wine.
Monica Meglasson
came to Caterina in 1998 and in 2002 took over as Winemaker and
Director of operations.
In honor of the
wineries Italian heritage Meglasson began working with the
varietals Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio. To date they have been very
popular and regularly sell out before the release of the next
vintage.
An Oregon native,
Meglasson holds great passion for the wines of Washington State
believing it to have the perfect climate. Hot summer days and cool
summer nights
provide grapes with
the perfect conditions for ripening. The unique soil composition is
due to ancient floods and lends very distinctive terrior to it’s
valleys. Meglasson is also very enthusiastic about the caliber of
wine grape growers she works with.
Caterina is a boutique
winery producing a wide range of wines from the Bohemian Series of
"Artistic Affordable Blends" to the Vineyard Series of exclusive
single vineyard old vine wines. Varietals include Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, Syrah, Sauvignon
Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Viognier and Riesling.
